Kevin Shaw, a resident of Dronfield, was found guilty of assaulting a 19-year-old woman in the Stannington district of Sheffield in the year 1989.
The breakthrough in the case came when DNA evidence collected from the victim was linked to a sample Shaw had given during his 2007 arrest for a different issue.
At the time of his conviction in May 2008, Shaw was 53 years old, and he received a prison sentence of 12 years.
This sentence was subsequently shortened to 10 years following an appeal.
