A Barnsley man has received a prison sentence after drinking six beers and injuring a child with an air rifle. The incident occurred in the early hours of June 15, 2024, at 2:16 am when ambulance services called the police to reports of a child suffering a stomach injury in Bolton upon Dearne, Barnsley.
It was believed the injury resulted from an air rifle.
The child was taken to hospital for treatment; their injuries were serious but not life-threatening, according to South Yorkshire Police.
Officers responded to the scene and arrested Kevan Turner, 43, of Bank End Close, on suspicion of assault.
During police questioning on June 16, 2024, Turner claimed ignorance regarding how the firearm caused the child's injuries.
He revealed that he had consumed six cans of beer around that time and explained that he had borrowed the air rifle from a neighbor to shoot rats.
Turner was charged with wounding without intent and pleaded guilty to this charge at Sheffield Crown Court on June 12, 2025.
He was sentenced on August 18, 2025, to serve three years and four months in prison at the same court.
