KARL EKLUND AND JONATHAN MARKHAM SHOCK GRIMSBY WITH SEX OFFENCES INVOLVING TEENAGE GIRL

In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the community of Grimsby, two men have been found guilty of engaging in unlawful sexual activities with a teenage girl, ultimately leading to the loss of her innocence. The court proceedings revealed a troubling pattern of behavior involving Karl Eklund, aged 25, residing on Winchester Avenue in Grimsby, and Jonathan Markham, aged 21, from Laceby Road, also in Grimsby.

According to the evidence presented at Hull Crown Court, Eklund admitted to two separate incidents of sexual activity with the girl, which took place between July 21 and December 31 of 2008. Meanwhile, Markham confessed to a single incident occurring between May 1 and May 31 of 2007. The prosecution, led by Patrick Palmer, detailed how both men engaged in sexual relations with the girl, with her giving her consent, during different periods when she was under the age of 16. The court heard that these encounters happened while the girl was in a relationship with both men at different times, and she was only 14 years old during her interactions with Markham and 15 during her encounters with Eklund.

Defense attorneys provided context for their clients’ actions. Bernard Gateshill, representing Eklund, highlighted that he was a father of two and came from a disadvantaged background. Despite this, Gateshill emphasized that Eklund maintained a decent work record and was employed as a gardener at a local crematorium. On the other hand, Simon Hirst, representing Markham, pointed out that his client was only 17 at the time of the offence. Hirst added that Markham’s offending behavior had slowed down, he was gainfully employed, and he expressed remorse for his actions.

Judge John Dowse addressed the court, noting that the girl involved was 14 when she was with Markham and 15 during her interactions with Eklund. He explained that she had consented to the sexual activities after meeting up with the young men. The judge remarked to Markham, “You stole her innocence from her,” underscoring the gravity of the offense.

Further details revealed that Eklund had initially “blown the whistle” on Markham, which led to the investigation. It was also disclosed that after the girl became “besotted” with Eklund, the two exchanged text messages, indicating a complex and troubling relationship dynamic. The girl has since moved on and is now in a different relationship.

Judge Dowse emphasized the seriousness of the case, stating, “This is a very serious offence. She was a willing participant, but it doesn’t make your culpability any less.” In sentencing, Eklund received a one-year suspended prison sentence, along with an 18-month supervision order and 200 hours of unpaid work. He was also ordered to register as a sex offender for five years. Markham was sentenced to 150 hours of unpaid community service and was ordered to pay £250 in court costs. Both men are required to pay an additional £250 towards legal costs.
