WOMAN KILLS 91-YEAR-OLD MOTHER WITH HAMMER THEN JUMPS OUT OF WINDOW
A woman tragically ended her 91-year-old mother's life by repeatedly hitting her on the head with a hammer before attempting to take her own life by jumping out of an upstairs window. However, Karen Wilshaw initial suicide attempt was unsuccessful, and the 63 year old managed to get up, re-enter their Cheadle home, ascend the stairs, and leap for a second time.
Her husband, Ralph Harrison, returned from a fishing trip at JCB fishing club in Rocester to find her severely injured on the patio.
He was heard exclaiming: "No Karen, no".
Emergency medical personnel arrived, but both women were declared dead that afternoon.
An inquest at Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire's Coroner's Court ruled Joyce's death as unlawful killing and Karen's death as suicide.
The inquest revealed that Karen and Ralph shared their Park Lane home with her mother, Joyce.
The couple resided upstairs while the elderly woman lived downstairs.
Detective Sergeant Andrew Shorthouse from Staffordshire Police's major investigation team stated that Ralph contacted police at 2.59pm on December 31, 2023, reporting he found his mother-in-law inside the residence and his wife outside on the patio.
The police found Joyce in the living room with extensive head injuries and Karen on the patio.
The investigation showed Karen had voiced some concerns about Joyce's diminishing condition and financial management, but there was no forensic evidence of third-party involvement.
Medical professionals revealed that Karen had battled anxiety and depression, receiving treatment between February 2021 and February 2023.
She served as the primary carer for her mother and was offered a carer's assessment shortly before the incident.
Joyce was scheduled to receive a dementia diagnosis on January 9, 2024, and her care was deemed satisfactory.
Surveillance footage indicated that Karen had been angling in Rocester on the day, and the police recovered a hammer containing Joyce's DNA.
The probe revealed Karen had concerns over her mother’s rapidly deteriorating condition and her ability to manage her care, along with anxieties about financial matters.
The coroner concluded that Joyce had died as a result of an unlawful killing.
