A woman endured abuse at the hands of her controlling husband, including demands that she shave her head and punishments with a belt, as revealed in Manchester Crown Court.Kalanther Nibraz, aged 45, made her life miserable during their 17-year marriage.
His abusive actions ranged from inspecting her phone, whipping her with a belt, forcing her to shave her hair, kicking her in the abdomen, throwing objects at her, and verbal abuse, according to reports from Manchester Evening News.
During this period, he engaged in romantic relations with other women and justified his infidelity by claiming his wife was neither wealthy nor attractive.
He also prevented her from applying for British citizenship and barred her from contacting certain friends he considered to be bad influences.
The police became involved after his wife confided in a friend about the situation.
When questioned, Nibraz claimed he had treated his wife well and given her freedom, and he falsely asserted that she shaved her head on her own accord.
The couple moved to Manchester after meeting in Sri Lanka.
He returned to Sri Lanka before the pandemic, which caused him to remain there for a period due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Unemployed, Nibraz relied on his wife’s earnings to fund his ongoing cannabis consumption, as he was unable to find employment.
