BIRMINGHAM MAN JAILED FOR LIFE IN COLD CASE RAPE

A former police detective, Kim Robotham, played a crucial role in catching Justin Tuzzio for a vicious attack that had haunted him for a decade.

Robotham, who was based in Digbeth at the time of the attack, initially suspected Tuzzio was responsible after the victim identified him in a line-up.

Despite initial lack of sufficient evidence to charge him in 1995, advances in forensic science later enabled the police to reexamine the case.

Last year, Robotham learned about cutting-edge forensic technology used to solve cold cases and contacted the police.

His tip contributed to the arrest and subsequent conviction of Tuzzio.

Tuzzio, 31, formerly of Brambling Walk, Ladywood, was found guilty of attempted rape, indecent assault, and robbery.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment but must serve at least five years before becoming eligible for parole.

He was already serving a life sentence for seven robberies imposed the previous January.

The victim's life was profoundly impacted, as the assault 'blighted' her social and work life.

Tuzzio pleaded guilty and was subsequently jailed for life, marking a significant breakthrough in the case thanks to technological advances and persistent investigation efforts.
