MAN SPARED JAIL AFTER ASSAULTING EX-PARTNER
A man who assaulted his former partner multiple times following the destruction of her television was not handed an immediate prison sentence.Joshua Read, formerly residing on Ffordd Llanerch in Penycae, appeared before Mold Crown Court on Thursday to be sentenced.
The 28-year-old previously pleaded guilty to charges of causing actual bodily harm, possessing drugs on two occasions, and carrying an offensive weapon a baseball bat in a public space.
Prosecutor Ryan Rothwell informed the court that all the incidents occurred in Wrexham on January 20, 2023.
The defendant and Susan Evans, the victim, had a past relationship that had ended.
They had an agreement in place preventing him from visiting her home.
However, on the night of the assault, Read disregarded this agreement, arrived at her residence, and insisted on entering.
During his stay of several hours, he consumed lager and became verbally aggressive.
His behaviour escalated as he began physically pushing her.
He then punched her in the face, picked up a new television set, and threw it onto the floor, causing it to break.
Further violence ensued as Read repeatedly struck Ms Evans in the head and stomach and attempted to strangle her.
He eventually left the scene but took a baseball bat from the property.
When police arrested him shortly afterward, officers also discovered cannabis and cocaine in his possession.
The judge sentenced Read to 24 months in prison, but this was suspended for 18 months.
The sentence includes 26 sessions of a rehabilitative programme, 15 days of rehabilitation activities, a 90-day electronic alcohol monitoring requirement, and 100 hours of unpaid community work.
A domestic abuse protection order was also issued, lasting for ten years.
