JOSEPH ROTHWELL FROM LINCOLNSHIRE THREATENS TO MURDER AND BURN DOWN HOME

In a disturbing series of events that unfolded in the summer of 2023, Joseph Rothwell, a man with a troubling criminal history, engaged in a pattern of threatening and violent behavior towards his then-partner, Louise Roberts. The incidents took place in Conwy, where Ms Roberts resided, and have left her deeply traumatized and fearful for her safety.

Rothwell, aged 43 and living on Talbot Road in Blackpool, was brought before Mold Crown Court to face charges related to controlling and coercive conduct. His actions, described by prosecutors as 'vile,' had a profound impact on Ms Roberts’ mental health, causing her to feel increasingly self-conscious and vulnerable. The court heard that Rothwell’s behavior was not only aggressive but also highly threatening, culminating in a series of violent and intimidating episodes.

According to prosecutor Simon Parry, the troubling sequence of events began in early July 2023. During an argument involving Rothwell, his mother, and Ms Roberts, Rothwell became visibly irate. In a fit of rage, he threatened to remove himself and his mother from Ms Roberts’ home and set the property ablaze while she was inside. This threat was not an isolated incident. The following morning, Rothwell called Ms Roberts derogatory names, including calling her a 's***,' and accused her of attempting to reconcile with her ex-partner. His threats escalated as he told her, 'snap your neck right now,' indicating a clear intent to harm.

On July 17, 2023, Rothwell further demonstrated his threatening behavior by sending her a voice recording in which he vowed to 'smash her mum’s head' and to 'murder' her again. During this recording, he also called her 'dirty' and 'horrible,' adding to the emotional distress she was experiencing. The pattern of intimidation continued into August, when on the 1st of that month, Rothwell and Ms Roberts found themselves locked in a bedroom during a dispute. During this altercation, Rothwell physically assaulted her, striking her face multiple times and pinning her to the floor. He then threatened to kill her, further demonstrating his violent tendencies.

Following the assault, Rothwell forced Ms Roberts to drive him to Llandudno General Hospital. She described the incident as 'a blur,' stating that she 'saw stars' and that Rothwell’s behavior was 'vile,' driven by what she believed to be paranoia. The emotional toll on Ms Roberts has been severe; she has reported losing her confidence entirely, feeling constantly self-conscious, and now frequently looking over her shoulder. Her mental health has significantly deteriorated as a result of Rothwell’s actions, leading her to avoid going out alone and feeling increasingly isolated.

Rothwell’s criminal record is extensive, with 28 previous convictions for 43 offences. Despite this, his legal team, led by Elen Owen, pointed out that he has made some progress, including recovery from addiction, gaining employment, and receiving mental health treatment. Rothwell suffers from depression, anxiety, and severe post-traumatic stress disorder, which his advocates argue have contributed to his behavior.

The court acknowledged the heartfelt statement made by Ms Roberts, recognizing her courage in speaking out. In response, Rothwell was sentenced to 19 months in prison and was issued a seven-year restraining order to protect Ms Roberts from further contact. The judge emphasized the seriousness of Rothwell’s actions and the need to safeguard victims from such violent and controlling behavior, especially given the history of his convictions and the impact on those around him.
