CELTIC FAN JAILED FOR BRUTAL DOMESTIC ASSAULT AFTER OLD FIRM GAME
A man once accused of breaking into Ibrox Stadium and leaving a Celtic flag is now behind bars for a brutal domestic attack following an Old Firm game.Joseph Mulheron was found guilty of assaulting his then-partner Penny Anglim in her flat in Glasgow's Castlemilk on April 7, 2024.
The court heard that Mulheron, who was enraged after being falsely accused of cheating with her brother, repeatedly beat Miss Anglim, strangled her, and stabbed her with a knife and fork.
Prosecutor Ryan Watson described how Mulheron went after her, punching her repeatedly and kicking her all over her body, and then struck her on the head with her mobile phone, smashing it.
He also stabbed her on the head and placed his hands around her throat, choking and strangling her, in an effort to kill her.
Mulheron then threatened to cut her with a kitchen knife and laughed as he did it, dropping the knife on her head during the assault.
The victim believed Mulheron intended to kill her, and she apologized for an accusation, hoping to make the attack stop, which Mulheron recorded but the jury later deleted the allegation from the charge.
She was eventually rescued by her mother, who found her hysterical and suffering facial swelling, a swollen shut eye, bruising, and abdominal pain.
Mulheron has a history of domestic matters and previous convictions but has never received a custodial sentence before.
The court considered a custodial sentence, and Sheriff Michael Hanlon deferred sentencing until next month pending background reports, stating, "A custodial sentence is very much in my mind.
Mr Mulheron was given the privilege of bail while the trial was ongoing but standing the serious nature of the offence, I withdraw bail and he will be remanded into custody."
