DUMBARTON MAN JAILED FOR MULTIPLE SEX OFFENCES
Judge Lord Uist told Joseph McMullan that his attitude to women was “quite deplorable” and the gravity of the crimes required a substantial prison sentence. The judge stated: “Joseph Martin McMullan, you were convicted by the jury at Dumbarton High Court of a charge of attempted rape, a charge of indecent assault and a charge of rape, the victim in each charge being a different woman.
On the first of these charges you attacked a woman visiting your house by violently pushing her into your bedroom and onto your bed, partially removing her clothing, committing indecent acts against her and attempting to rape her.
You failed to do so when two other people walked into the room.
On the second charge you took a woman visiting your house on a car journey to buy drink and indecently assaulted her on the return journey.
Fortunately, she was able to escape from the car.
On the third charge, you had sexual intercourse with a sleeping woman who sought refuge in your house after an argument with her partner.
McMullan denied these offences in his evidence and to the social worker who reported on him to court.
The judge noted that he had shown no remorse and blamed his victims for his actions, viewing himself as a victim.
Lord Uist also placed McMullan on the Sex Offenders Register during a hearing at Edinburgh High Court.
Following a six-day trial at Dumbarton High Court, McMullan expressed thanks to the jury as he was led to the cells.
During the trial, it was revealed that one woman, in her early 20s, was attacked in her car between 2010 and 2011.
She had gone to McMullan’s house in Dumbarton to buy cannabis, found a barbecue held there, and after a car ride to buy more beer, he started undoing her bikini top, stopped the car, and sexually assaulted her, biting her nipple so badly it required stitches.
She managed to fight him off and escape.
Another woman recounted going to McMullan’s house to buy drugs after arguing with her boyfriend.
She fell asleep during a visit, and woke up to find him raping her.
Additionally, McMullan was convicted of attempting to rape a woman in 2008, which was interrupted when someone entered the room.
