JOSE VIEIRA JAILED IN COVENTRY FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT AFTER FLEEING TO GUERNSEY
In June 2019, a disturbing case unfolded involving a man from Coventry named Jose Vieira, who was convicted of sexually assaulting a teenage girl. The incident, which took place in Coventry, led to Vieira’s eventual imprisonment, but not before he attempted to evade justice by fleeing the country.
Initially, Vieira, then 44 years old and residing in Coventry, admitted to the allegations when he was arrested.
However, before his case could be fully processed at Warwick Crown Court, he chose to escape the legal proceedings by fleeing the United Kingdom.
His cowardly act forced the young victim to testify in his absence during a trial held in August of the following year.
The girl, who was only 15 at the time of the assault, recounted the distressing events in a recorded interview played to the jury.
The court heard that the assault occurred at an address in Coventry while the girl was watching a film.
Vieira, who was sitting beside her, began to touch her back and then proceeded to put his hand inside her top, undoing her bra — the act that constituted the first charge.
The girl described how Vieira then started to play with her breasts and touch her nipples.
Feeling uncomfortable and overwhelmed, she eventually got up and walked away from him.
During the trial, Vieira attempted to justify his actions by referencing traumatic incidents from his childhood.
Despite this, he was visibly remorseful when he later contacted his wife, confessing that he had done something unforgivable.
The prosecution, led by Lynette McClement, highlighted that Vieira’s initial admissions upon arrest were limited and sought to downplay the severity of his conduct.
Following the guilty verdicts, authorities secured a European arrest warrant, which led to Vieira’s arrest in Guernsey earlier this year.
His arrest marked the end of a lengthy pursuit, and he was brought before the court to face justice.
Vieira, who was living in Coventry at the time of the offences, was sentenced to three years and eight months in prison for the sexual assaults.
Additionally, he received a consecutive four-month sentence for failing to surrender to his bail conditions.
The court also ordered Vieira to register as a sex offender for life, emphasizing the seriousness of his crimes.
The charges against Vieira stemmed from a single incident in 2017, which involved two stages of the same assault.
The victim’s statement, read aloud in court, detailed her feelings of sickness and disgust following the incident.
She expressed feelings of worthlessness and even thoughts of suicide, stating, “I felt disgusting and grubby.
I have had thoughts of suicide because I felt I would rather die than go through this sh***y period of my life.” Judge Peter Cooke addressed Vieira directly during sentencing, condemning his actions and character.
He remarked that Vieira, once perceived as a man of good character, had succumbed to dark and sexual behavior.
The judge acknowledged that Vieira had shown some remorse and had begun to admit his guilt, but his attempt to escape justice in his absence ultimately led to a harsher sentence.
The court’s decision underscores the gravity of sexual assault and the importance of accountability, regardless of attempts to evade the law.
