The prosecutor further explained that after the initial attack, McSweeney returned multiple times, continuing to beat her and inflict serious injuries.
Adding to the heinous nature of the crime, McSweeney took her mobile phone as he left.
He threw the device over a garden wall, effectively preventing anyone from calling for help or offering assistance.
Witnesses and CCTV footage placed him walking back to his accommodation—the caravan where he was living—and the next morning, he was seen joking and laughing with friends, seemingly unconcerned about the gravity of his actions or the crime he had committed.
Emergency services were dispatched at approximately 2:44 a.m.
after Zara Aleena was discovered with severe head injuries and struggling to breathe.
Despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries—the cause of death was noted to be compression to the neck and blunt trauma to the head.

These reviews by the Met’s Directorate of Professional Standards concluded that there was no misconduct or impropriety during their surveillance.
Defense lawyer George Carter-Stephenson KC offered some insight into McSweeney’s troubled background, describing a childhood marked by domestic violence, with an absent father and a mother suffering from drug addiction.
