GATESHEAD THUG SENTENCED FOR ASSAULTS AND SPITTING ON PARTNER

A Gateshead thug who subjected his partner to two assaults and spat on her has told a court "I want help".

Jonathon Olley was seen spitting on and kicking his partner during one attack, before carrying out another assault at a hotel.

The 38-year-old was heard by terrified hotel staff telling the woman he was going to "kill" her, before he was arrested.

A court heard that Olley has issues with alcohol, and at a court appearance on Friday, he told a judge he wanted to "fix" his problems.

Olley, of Grisedale Gardens, Gateshead, appeared at Newcastle Crown Court via link from HMP Durham to be sentenced for two counts of assault by beating.

He had pleaded guilty to the offences.

The court heard that on July 7, Olley carried out his first assault.

Emily Sanderson, prosecuting, said: "A witness heard shouting from her home and saw a female with a dog, crouching down.

A male was with her who spat at her and kicked her lower body.

She then began shouting for help." Police were then called and arrested Olley.

But while on bail, he went on to commit another assault against the victim at a hotel in Leam Lane on August 22.

Staff heard "banging and shouting" coming from one room, and later saw the victim "fly backwards out of the room and hit the wall".

Ms Sanderson said: "The defendant was shouting and swearing.

He flung her backwards into a wall and shouted at her 'we are not meant to be together, when we leave here I'm going to kill you'." Terrified staff also felt so threatened by Olley that they locked themselves in an office.

Olley was arrested later that day at another hotel in Washington.

The court heard he had 20 previous convictions for 29 offences, including battery and GBH.

He had also been convicted of stalking a previous partner in 2024.

Robin Turton, defending, said: "The defendant has problems with alcohol.

He comes from a family of alcoholics and it is a trigger in all of his offending.

He is a trusted worker in prison and is a full time cleaner." Speaking to the court Olley said: "I want the help.

I want to fix whatever problems I've got." Recorder Peter Makepeace KC sentenced him to 10 weeks prison.

Due to time already served, he was released immediately.
