JONATHAN SMITH FROM NEWCASTLE CAUGHT IN SHOCKING SEXUAL MISCONDUCT IN STOKE-ON-TRENT

In a disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the community, Jonathan Smith, a 24-year-old man from Newcastle, has been sentenced to prison after engaging in inappropriate and illegal sexual activities with a teenage girl. The incident unfolded after Smith, who was known to have responsibilities at his local church, initiated contact with the girl through the social media platform Facebook.

According to court proceedings, Smith and the girl, who was approximately nine years younger than him, engaged in numerous lengthy conversations online. During these exchanges, Smith made inappropriate inquiries about her personal body details, including her bra size, and questioned whether she was a virgin. He also discussed her physical attributes in a manner that was clearly sexual in nature.

The court heard that Smith suggested they meet in person, which the girl agreed to. On September 6 of the previous year, Smith picked her up in his car and drove her to his residence. While watching a DVD together, Smith initiated physical contact by kissing her. The prosecutor, Neil Ahuja, described the situation, stating that the kissing escalated into more intimate acts, with Smith kissing down her neck and chest area. During this encounter, Smith used his hands to feel her legs and attempted to put his hands inside her trousers. The girl managed to stop him from proceeding further.

Further contact occurred on September 23, when Smith again picked her up and took her to his home. This time, they went to his bedroom, where Smith suggested they sit on the bed and continued to kiss. During this encounter, Smith moved his hand under her clothing and touched her breast. He again attempted to put his hands inside her trousers, but she stopped him once more. Smith then suggested that she could lose her virginity, an indication of his continued inappropriate intentions.

The girl’s father became aware of the ongoing communication between his daughter and Smith, which led to Smith’s arrest on December 11. Smith, who resides on May Street in Newcastle, pleaded guilty to two charges of engaging in sexual activity with a child. It was also revealed that in 2002, Smith had previously received a caution for indecent assault on a girl under the age of 14 when he was 15 years old, and the victim was around 11 or 12.

During the court hearing, Antonie Muller, representing Smith, argued that Smith did not use force during the incidents and stopped when asked by the girl. Muller described Smith as sexually immature and pleaded for a suspended sentence, emphasizing that Smith did not act violently or coercively.

However, Judge Paul Glenn was unequivocal in his judgment, stating that the severity of the offences warranted immediate imprisonment. Smith was sentenced to six months in prison, with the possibility of serving up to half of that term. Additionally, he will be registered as a sex offender for the next seven years and is prohibited from engaging in activities involving children.

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Glenn highlighted the vulnerability of the young girl, noting that she was emotionally and sexually immature and had a crush on Smith, which he exploited. The judge emphasized that Smith’s actions were premeditated and that he was willing to go as far as the girl’s boundaries allowed, despite her clear discomfort. The court acknowledged the significant emotional and psychological impact this case has had on the victim, underscoring the importance of protecting children from such predatory behavior.
