CHESTER-LE-STREET MAN JAILED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES AFTER GROOMING TEENAGER
A Chester-le-Street predator who told a teenager "she should have his baby" once she turned 16 has been jailed.
Jonathan Paton was 31 when he met the girl online, claiming he was 20 and called "Jonny".
He met her on Snapchat in summer 2020, encouraged her to visit his house, and then had sex with her.
Paton continued to have sex with the girl for several months, despite her telling him 'no' on multiple occasions.
After she reported the abuse to police, Paton tried to erase contact by deleting messages and removing her from Snapchat.
He was arrested and denied charges during police interviews, claiming he didn't know her age and that no sexual activity occurred.
Evidence from messages proved otherwise, leading to charges of rape of a child, four counts of sexual activity with a child, and grooming.
The court found him guilty, and he was sentenced to 13 years in prison, placed on the sex offenders register for life, handed an indefinite restraining order, and a sexual harm prevention order.
DC Liam Padget from Durham Constabulary's online child abuse investigation team stated that Paton knew the victim was a child but continued to abuse her for his own gratification, with officers uncovering his messages showing awareness of her age.
