A MAN WHO FRACTURED HIS GIRLFRIEND'S RIBS AND CAUSED HER LUNG TO COLLAPSE DURING AN ASSAULT HAS BEEN JAILED
Jon-Jay Thompson, aged 24, assaulted his partner, biting her nose during an attack that left her fearing for her life, as revealed in court at Carlisle Crown Court.Following his arrest, Thompson, residing on Victoria Terrace in Maryport, responded to an officer’s question by asking, "Do you never argue with your partner?" He was subsequently sentenced to 34 months in prison after pledging guilty to causing grievous bodily harm.
The court was informed that the assault took place on 18 February at a shared residence with his family.
The attack began with verbal threats and insults in a bedroom before escalating to physical violence, including punching, prosecutor Sarah Johnston stated.
Ms Johnston detailed that Thompson struck her in the torso and ribs, bit her on the nose, fingers, and arm, all while maintaining a chokehold, leading her to believe she was going to die.
Her injuries included torn lung tissue, numerous bruises, cuts, and grazes across her body.
In a victim impact statement, she described feelings of anger, abandonment, panic attacks, and scepticism about trusting another man again.
Described as a "paranoid and controlling individual," Thompson became aggressive again while in an ambulance, where he was handcuffed.
He was heard to declare, "nobody will be making a statement, you're wasting your time." Judge Michael Hayton QC stated that without timely medical treatment, her life could have been at serious risk, noting that she almost died.
Thompson was also ordered to cease all contact with her.
