BOYFRIEND WAGED 'CAMPAIGN OF VIOLENCE'

Allan Moralee, a 39-year-old man from Maryport with a history of assault and harassment crimes against women, pleaded guilty to three recent assaults that resulted in actual bodily harm to his partner.

During a court hearing at Carlisle Crown Court, prosecutor Brendan Burke detailed a week of violent incidents in December of the previous year.

The violence started on December 8 when Moralee’s partner accidentally spilled a small amount of milk on the floor while heating a bottle for their baby.

Moralee became angry upon discovering his socks had gotten wet and reacted violently.

He slapped her across the face, then grabbed her by the throat and pushed her against a wall, threatening, “This is payback time.” After releasing her grip, he kicked her legs, leaving bruises.

A second assault occurred three days later, triggered by his displeasure over a soft drink his partner’s mother bought him and frustration over increased cigarette paper prices.

Moralee initially threw a can at her, then brandished a bread knife claiming he would use it against anyone who entered the house.

He bent the blade, causing genuine fear that he might harm her.

He injured her nose with the knife’s handle, prompting her to apply makeup to conceal the injury.

The final attack took place on December 13, during which Moralee, upset by his inability to access money from her family, kicked and kneed her in the stomach.

He also pressed a pen painfully into her back, scratching her skin.

On another occasion, he pushed her underwater while she was bathing.

The assault concluded when she fled to a neighbour's house, calling the police.

The victim described feeling frightened, suffering panic attacks, and experiencing flashbacks, including being startled by sounds of her mother handling utensils.

Despite his violent behaviour, Moralee sent her numerous letters from prison, expressing remorse, claiming to have cancer, and professing love.

His criminal record extends back 15 years, including convictions for battery and harassment.

Jeff Smith explained that Moralee’s relationship was troubled and marked by mutual violence, adding that ending it was a positive step.

Throughout the hearing, Moralee interrupted, denying some accusations and expressing remorse, mentioning personal struggles such as the anniversary of his son’s death.

Judge Nicholas Barker condemned Moralee’s pattern of violence, emphasizing that his coercive and aggressive behaviour was aimed at controlling a vulnerable woman.

The judge sentenced him to 32 months in prison and imposed a ten-year restraining order to prevent any contact with the victim.

Moralee responded dismissively with a simple “Good!” as the sentence was announced.
