WISHAW MAN JOHN TAYLOR JAILED FOR SIX YEARS AFTER RAPE
A MAN who raped a mentally handicapped woman was jailed for six years yesterday.
John Taylor, 42, had denied raping the 32-year-old woman.
Taylor, whose address was given as c/o The Shield Centre in Hill Street, Wishaw, had earlier told the High Court in Airdrie that the woman had approached him in a distressed state, saying she had fallen, and that he had bought plasters for her.
However, a jury of 10 men and five women unanimously found Taylor guilty of raping her in Hamilton in May last year.
He had forced her to go with him on the evening of May 14 from Low Waters Road to Mote Hill where he raped her.
Lord Mayfield said: 'You have been found guilty of a serious offence...
I am bound to take a serious view.' Defence counsel told the court that Taylor had left his job of 19 years with Phillips in Hamilton because of his involvement in the case.
The court heard that Taylor was single and had moved from Hamilton to a hostel in Wishaw since the rape.
