EX-POLICE OFFICER JAILED FOR KILLING ELDERLY MOTHER IN LANCASHIRE
John Stephen Green, aged 66, was found guilty of intentionally suffocating his 88-year-old mother, Bernadette Green, at their family home in Preston, Lancashire, on May 18.The incident occurred after a period during which her condition had significantly deteriorated, with her body displaying severe signs of neglect.
Prosecutors pointed out that Green had previously referred to her as "a stinking corpse" in text messages before her death.
He received a life sentence with a minimum term of 14 years following a trial at Preston Crown Court, emphasizing the seriousness of his crime.
The case was described by officials as "a disturbing incident where a man who was supposed to care for his vulnerable elderly mother instead neglected her and ultimately caused her death to avoid caring for her anymore." Green maintained his innocence, denying the murder charge and challenging the identification of the body by the medical examiner during proceedings, but the evidence was overwhelming.
It was revealed that Mrs.
Green had not visited a doctor since October 2013 and was weighed at only 5 stone 10 pounds (32 kg) at her death— a drastic decrease from her previous weight of 12 stone (76 kg) in 2013.
Police stated that Green refused all opportunities for medical help and exhibited clear signs of physical abuse and neglect.
The case has been considered particularly shocking due to the neglect involved and Green’s apparent motive to eliminate his caring responsibilities.
