JOHN POOLE FROM AYR SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO HIS GOLDEN RETRIEVER BISCUIT
In a disturbing incident that shocked the seaside town of Ayr, John Poole, a resident of Paterson Street, was found guilty of inflicting severe abuse on his pet dog, Biscuit. The incident, which took place in January 2018, involved Poole violently battering his defenseless Golden Retriever, causing serious injuries and endangering her life.
According to court records, Poole, who was born around 1976, was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the attack.
Witnesses reported that he punched and kicked Biscuit repeatedly on her head and body, displaying a violent and uncontrolled rage.
The assault escalated when Poole threw the dog against a wall, further injuring her.
In a particularly heinous act, he then hurled Biscuit onto a busy road in Ayr, placing her in imminent danger of being hit by passing vehicles.
The police responded swiftly to the scene around 7 pm on January 27, 2018.
Officers found Biscuit injured and in distress, and she was immediately taken to a local veterinary clinic for emergency treatment.
Fortunately, veterinary assessments indicated that, despite the severity of her injuries, Biscuit was expected to recover without lasting damage.
Poole was arrested at the scene and taken into police custody.
During his court appearance at Ayr Sheriff Court, he admitted to causing unnecessary suffering to Biscuit by punching, kicking, and throwing her, actions that left her injured and vulnerable.
He also acknowledged behaving in a threatening and abusive manner towards police officers, shouting at them and making threats of violence.
Defence solicitor Mandy Stewart explained to the court that Poole struggles with alcoholism and was attempting to overcome his addiction, which had led to a relapse around Christmas time.
She emphasized that his behavior was out of character and linked to his ongoing efforts to comply with court orders from previous cases.
In sentencing, the court handed down a four-month prison term and ordered Poole to relinquish ownership of Biscuit.
Additionally, he was banned from keeping any animals for a period of four years, a ban that expired in February 2022.
The court's decision underscores the seriousness of animal cruelty and the need to protect vulnerable animals from such abuse.
Following this case, in October 2018, Poole appeared again in court on charges related to making hoax calls to emergency services.
The outcome of this subsequent case remains pending.
It is also noted that Poole has at least one previous conviction for violence, raising concerns about his history of aggressive behavior and the potential risk he poses to others and animals alike.
