JOHN POOLE SHIPLEY VICAR JAILED FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT ON 15-YEAR-OLD GIRL
In a case that has shocked the community of Shipley, West Yorkshire, Reverend John Poole, aged 50, was sentenced to four months in prison after being found guilty of indecently assaulting a 15-year-old girl. The incident occurred in the context of a trusted pastoral relationship, which was supposed to provide comfort and guidance to the young girl. The teenage girl, a parishioner whose family regularly attended St. Paul’s Church in Shipley, sought out Reverend Poole for counselling following a distressing incident at a youth camp, where she had been sexually molested by another boy. The girl’s family believed that speaking with the vicar might help her cope with the trauma she had experienced.
Over time, the girl and Reverend Poole developed a close, seemingly supportive relationship. However, during one of their routine meetings at the vicarage located within the church grounds, the situation took a disturbing turn. According to court reports, Reverend Poole initiated a physical act of misconduct by kissing the girl. The assault escalated when he placed his hand down her trousers and also touched her breasts, actions that were clearly inappropriate and unlawful.
The teenager, feeling uncomfortable and perhaps overwhelmed, made an excuse and left the vicarage. Her family, who attended the same church, became aware of the incident after discovering what had transpired. This led to Reverend Poole’s resignation from his position at the church, a move that was likely motivated by the fallout from the allegations.
Bradford Crown Court heard the details of the case, emphasizing the breach of trust involved in the assault. The court’s judgment reflected the seriousness of the offence, which was committed in a setting where the victim sought help and reassurance. Reverend John Poole’s actions have not only resulted in his imprisonment but also caused significant distress within the community of Shipley, raising questions about safeguarding and the responsibilities of clergy members towards their congregants.
