JOHN NORMAN FROM PAIGNTON SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF YOUNG BOY IN DEVON
In August 2017, a disturbing case unfolded involving a man named John Norman, who was ultimately convicted of sexually abusing a young boy in the town of Paignton, Devon.Norman, who was homeless at the time, was staying at a friend’s residence when he committed the heinous act.
The boy’s family, showing compassion and concern, had taken Norman in, unaware of his intentions.
Tragically, Norman exploited the trust placed in him by sneaking into the boy’s bedroom during the night and subjecting him to sexual abuse.
The young victim, who was under the age of 13, endured this trauma in silence for several years.
It was only when he reached nearly 14 years of age that he confided in his parents about what had happened.
Following this revelation, the boy’s family sought guidance from the NSPCC helpline, which provided advice and support.
They then made the decision to contact law enforcement authorities, leading to an investigation that culminated in Norman’s arrest and subsequent trial.
John Norman, aged 39 and residing on Esplanade Road in Paignton, denied the charges of sexual assault of a child under 13.
However, the jury at Exeter Crown Court found him guilty after a thorough trial.
Norman’s conviction was met with a three-year prison sentence handed down by Judge Graham Cottle.
In addition to his incarceration, the judge ordered Norman to sign the sex offenders’ register for life and imposed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which restricts his future contact with children.
During the sentencing, Judge Cottle emphasized the innocence and honesty of the young victim, stating, “Having seen the boy giving evidence, it is perfectly obvious that he was an entirely truthful boy who wrestled with what happened and simply did not understand it at the time or know what to do subsequently.” The judge further explained that, “As is often the case with young children, he was confused, embarrassed and simply did not know how to respond to an incident involving the touching of his private parts.
He had no idea what was going on or why it was happening.” Judge Cottle also highlighted the breach of trust involved, noting that Norman had been allowed to stay in the boy’s home, which made his actions even more damaging.
The impact on the young victim was profound; once an outgoing child, he was reported by his mother to have “lost his sparkle” following the incident.
The victim, now 15 years old, testified that Norman had woken him by nudging him and then placed his hand and head under the covers.
The boy believed he had been drinking before the assault, which added to his confusion.
It was only nearly a year later that he disclosed the abuse to his parents.
His family, concerned and seeking justice, contacted the NSPCC helpline anonymously for advice.
They then proceeded to involve the police, leading to Norman’s arrest and conviction.
The case underscores the importance of vigilance and the vital role played by organizations like the NSPCC in protecting vulnerable children from abuse and ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable.
