STALKER WHO DRAGGED PARTNER’S CAR DOWN STREET AT SPEED IS JAILED
A man has been sentenced to 22 months in prison for an incident involving him reversing into his former partner’s vehicle and dragging her along the street at a fast pace.Kevin Braithwaite, 64 and of no fixed address in Paignton, appeared at Exeter Crown Court on August 7 or sentencing after a jury convicted him of dangerous driving and stalking with a fear of violence.
The court cleared him of criminal damage but found him guilty of drinking under the influence, refusing to give a breath sample, and driving while disqualified.
He was also disqualified from holding a driving license and received a ten-year restraining order.
During the court proceedings, it was detailed that between nine months and a year prior, Braithwaite had issued threats and used intimidation tactics against the victim via a third person.
His messages included descriptions such as ‘sitting duck’ and warnings related to her family visits.
He also sent her a link to a local will writing service, which increased her fears for her safety.
On September 8, 2024, police responded to multiple emergency calls reporting a traffic crash on Dartmouth Road in Paignton.
The victim recounted how Braithwaite repeatedly reversed his car into her, causing his vehicle’s tow hitch to get caught on her front grill.
He then drove off with her vehicle in tow, dragging her along the road while she remained inside.
He eventually stopped, got out, and assaulted her by punching her and pulling her hair as he tried to force her out of the vehicle.
Witnesses intervened, and Braithwaite fled the scene.
His car was discovered shortly afterward outside a hotel in Paignton, described as hot and smelling of a burnt clutch.
Inside, he was found intoxicated and was taken into custody.
During questioning, he made statements indicating a desire to kill the victim.
PC Amelia Valentine, who handled the case, stated: "These offences were utterly terrifying for the victim and have no doubt had a profound effect on her." “It was only due to luck that the dangerous driving didn’t result in serious injury or worse." “I would like to thank her for her bravery in reporting what happened and helping us to ensure Kevin Braithwaite has been brought to justice for his actions.
“The force continues to prioritise tackling violence against women girls, and we urge anybody who has been the victim of such offending to report it to us on 101 or via our website, or by calling 999 if in immediate danger." “Each report will be investigated and victims supported by our officers.”
