MAN KILLED PARTNER WITH PUNCH DURING HOLIDAY TRIP

A man hailing from Merseyside, who caused the death of his partner by punching her in the neck amid a family argument during their holiday on the Isle of Man, has been sentenced to a prison term of five years and eight months.

John Meadows, aged 53, struck 56-year-old Jillian Hughes with a single punch near the Palace Hotel along Douglas Promenade on the night of March 29.

During his sentencing at Douglas Courthouse, witnesses described the blow as equivalent to a “boxer's punch,” executed with lightning-fast accuracy.

Deemster Graeme Cook, who sentenced Meadows for manslaughter, told him he should be “thoroughly ashamed” of his “cowardly actions.” The court heard that Meadows and Ms Hughes, along with other family members, arrived on the island earlier that day by ferry and initially appeared “jovial.” The group visited several pubs in the capital but the mood changed after two members were stopped from re-entering Sam Webbs pub because a child was with them.

It was reported that their behaviour became “volatile” after a disagreement as they headed back to their hotel, the Rutland, around 20:55 GMT.

What started as pushing and shoving escalated into physical altercations outside the Majestic restaurant on the seafront involving Meadows and another man.

When Ms Hughes stepped in to defuse the fight, Meadows looked at her and said “and you as well,” before delivering a punch that led to a basal subarachnoid haemorrhage, which she succumbed to quickly.

After the attack, Meadows fled but was detained by police further down the promenade shortly after 21:45.

He told officers in a prepared statement that “none of my actions were intended to kill.” Meadows pleaded guilty to manslaughter during a hearing on Friday at Douglas Courthouse.

The court was told he had prior convictions related to violence and was cautioned for battery against Ms Hughes in 2017.

A victim impact statement from Ms Hughes’s family highlighted her personality as “the most special, funny, outgoing, sarcastic and beautiful person inside and out,” emphasising her infectious smile and laughter.

They expressed their grief, saying she was “needlessly taken from us” and that their family had been “shattered.” In his judgment, Deemster Cook emphasised that Meadow’s actions were “intended to cause harm,” criticising him for assaulting a defenceless woman who posed no threat.

He described the case as “harrowing” and noted that no sentence could ever restore Jillian Hughes.

Additionally, Meadow’s punishment includes a five-year ban from returning to the island upon his release, enforced through an exclusion order.
