JOHN MAWSON SENTENCED IN HARTLEPOOL FOR DECADES OF CHILD SEX OFFENCES

In a harrowing case that has shocked the community of Hartlepool, John Mawson, a 55-year-old man, was convicted of a long history of sexual abuse against children spanning over 25 years.

The offences, which took place primarily in Hartlepool and the surrounding areas, included a series of heinous acts committed against multiple victims, some as young as underage at the time of the assaults.

His criminal activities came to light after a victim, who had endured years of abuse, reported the incidents to the police in 2014.

The Durham Crown Court heard that Mawson, a lorry driver by profession, began abusing children when he was still a teenager himself.

Over the years, his predatory behavior continued into his forties, with victims describing his assaults as 'frenzied' and brutal.

Several victims recounted disturbing details of their encounters with Mawson.

One young girl was punched during her rape, and Mawson ominously warned her, saying, “If you tell, I will come and kill you when you are asleep.

No one will believe you, you will end up in a home.” Another victim was slapped by Mawson, who later attempted to buy her silence with a mere £10.

Court testimonies also revealed that Mawson lured some victims under false pretenses, such as promising to show them baby rabbits or offering a tin of beer in exchange for their silence.

During the trial, Mawson denied all charges, which included two counts of rape, one of attempted rape, 14 counts of indecent assault, and five counts of indecency with a child.

Despite his denials, the jury found him guilty on all counts after a two-week trial.

His defense lawyer, David Lamb, stated that Mawson still maintained his innocence, adding, “Mr Mawson still denies all the offences, so there is little I can say about them in mitigation.” Judge Simon Hickey sentenced Mawson to a substantial 23-year prison term, emphasizing the gravity of his crimes.

The judge described Mawson’s actions as a “catalogue of sexual offending against young girls and boys spanning a quarter of a century,” noting the devastating impact on his victims.

He further stated, “These were grave and heinous offences which, understandably, devastated the lives of the victims.” The judge also highlighted the emotional toll on the victims, who were forced to relive their trauma during the trial due to Mawson’s persistent denials.

In addition to his prison sentence, Mawson was subjected to a sexual harm prevention order, which prohibits him indefinitely from having unsupervised contact with children.

He is also required to register as a sex offender for life.

The court made it clear that Mawson would remain under extended supervision upon his eventual release, if he is released at all, underscoring the ongoing risk he poses to the community.

Earlier in April 2016, Mawson faced additional warnings from Judge Hickey, who cautioned him about the possibility of facing a “significant sentence” after being convicted of abusing eight individuals from the same village.

The judge also discussed the potential classification of Mawson as a dangerous offender, which could lead to an indeterminate or extended sentence designed to protect the public from further harm.

At that time, Mawson had denied all 22 charges related to the abuse of the eight victims, which included six women and two men.

The offences spanned from the mid-1970s to 2001, with some acts continuing after the victims’ 16th birthdays.

Despite complaints made locally around 2001, it was not until 2014 that police became involved following the victims’ reports.

Mawson’s trial concluded with a unanimous guilty verdict on all counts, and he was remanded in custody pending sentencing scheduled for May 27.

This case has left a lasting scar on the Hartlepool community, highlighting the importance of vigilance and the need for justice in cases of child abuse.

Mawson’s lengthy criminal history and the severity of his crimes serve as a stark reminder of the devastating impact such offences have on victims and their families.
