JOHN JACKSON SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE IN HATFIELD

In a case that has shocked the community of Hatfield, John Jackson, a 62-year-old man, was sentenced to 27 months in prison for the sexual abuse of two young girls, incidents that took place over four decades ago in 1977 and 1978.

Jackson’s offenses involved two victims, one aged between 11 and 12 years old, and the other approximately 9 or 10 years old at the time. The crimes came to light many years later, leading to his arrest and subsequent court proceedings. The incidents reportedly occurred while Jackson was under the influence of alcohol, which he was drinking at the time of the assaults.

During the hearing at St Albans Crown Court, Judge Andrew Bright QC addressed Jackson directly, emphasizing that if the crimes had been committed under current sentencing guidelines, the punishment would likely have been significantly harsher. Jackson, who resides at the Roe Green Centre in Hatfield, pleaded guilty to charges of indecent assault and assault by penetration, avoiding a trial that was initially scheduled.

Prosecutor Helen Guest provided details about the case, noting that Jackson was between 24 and 26 years old when the offenses occurred. He had been due to stand trial but changed his plea to guilty on November 9. The court had previously adjourned sentencing to allow for reports to be prepared.

Jackson’s defense lawyer, Anita Aurora, explained that her client had been hospitalized after attempting to overdose on paracetamol, which delayed his sentencing earlier this month. She also revealed that Jackson had no clear memory of the events, attributing this to his alcohol consumption and possible efforts to suppress the memories. Aurora conveyed Jackson’s remorse, stating that he had asked her to apologize to the victims and acknowledged the harm caused.

Despite these pleas, Judge Bright rejected the possibility of a suspended sentence, citing the severity and lifelong impact of the crimes on the victims. The judge emphasized that Jackson must have been aware that his actions were wrong and that the consequences had been profound and enduring. As part of his sentence, Jackson is also required to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years, underscoring the seriousness with which the court viewed the offenses.

Both victims were present in court during the proceedings, and the case has left a lasting mark on the community of Hatfield, highlighting the importance of justice and the protection of vulnerable individuals from such heinous acts.
