JOHN HUNT FROM WIDNES SENTENCED TO 17 YEARS FOR HISTORIC CHILD SEX OFFENSES
In a case that has spanned over two decades, John Hunt, a 50-year-old man from Widnes, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 17 years after being found guilty of multiple serious sex crimes committed against a young girl. The offenses, which took place when the victim was between the ages of 10 and 13, were only brought to light after a lengthy investigation and legal proceedings.
Hunt, who was in his late 20s and early 30s at the time of the abuse, was arrested last year following the culmination of the investigation.
During the trial at Mold Crown Court, the court was informed that Hunt was cleared of the charge of rape but was convicted of other serious offenses, including indecent assault, indecency with a child, and possession of indecent images of children.
The court heard that the victim, now an adult with her own family, had endured years of suffering due to Hunt’s actions.
Judge Rhys Rowlands addressed the court, describing Hunt as a “defendant of particular concern” due to the nature and duration of his crimes.
The judge emphasized that Hunt would serve a minimum of half of his 17-year sentence before being eligible for parole, but the decision on whether he would be released would ultimately rest with the Parole Board, based on his potential for rehabilitation.
It was noted during the proceedings that Hunt had no prior criminal convictions, which added a layer of complexity to the case.
However, the court was told that Hunt had shown no remorse for his actions, which contributed to the severity of his sentence.
The judge described the offending as “historic,” acknowledging that the crimes had been committed many years ago and only recently brought to justice.
He also highlighted that Hunt had groomed his victim from an early age, which compounded the trauma experienced by the victim over the years.
As part of his sentence, Hunt was ordered to register as a sex offender for life with the police.
Additionally, he was issued a Sexual Harm Prevention Order that will remain in effect for the duration of his life, serving as a safeguard to prevent any further harm.
The case underscores the importance of bringing long-standing abuse cases to justice, even when many years have passed since the offenses occurred.
