DELIVERY DRIVER JAILED FOR 19 YEARS FOR PARTNER'S MURDER IN GLASGOW
John Higgins, aged 63 and employed as a delivery driver, received a 19-year prison sentence after admitting to the murder of his partner, Amanda McAlear, at her flat located in Glasgow’s Barmulloch neighborhood. The killing took place on May 7, 2022, when Higgins attacked the 50-year-old Ms.
McAlear, whose body was found by her son the following day.
The court was informed that Higgins had attended a football game and gone to a pub prior to visiting her home.
Prosecutors stated that Higgins seized Ms.
McAlear and delivered several blows to her head and body, then strangled her.
Lady Haldane, the presiding judge, decided to reduce the minimum term from 20 to 19 years because Higgins pleaded guilty, explaining that his limited remorse and focus on her actions were reasons for the reduction.
The court highlighted the tragedy of her death, noting she was described by family as “evidently irreplaceable,” and that she missed welcoming her youngest grandchild.
The judge condemned Higgins’ behavior, emphasizing that her demise was caused by his violence, which caused her family profound grief.
During the pre-sentencing report, Higgins showed no remorse and left the scene under the impression that Ms.
McAlear may still have been alive after the assault.
He later appeared at a police station accompanied by his solicitor and was formally charged with her murder.
The court recognized that the violence was a tragic outcome of a dispute that escalated fatally.
