JOHN GREENSMITH CAUGHT FILMING GIRLS AT STUDLAND BEACH ESCAPES PRISON IN HAMPSHIRE
In August 2006, a disturbing incident unfolded at Studland Beach involving John Greensmith, a 47-year-old man from Alton, Hampshire. Greensmith was caught in the act of filming three young girls, aged between six and eight years old, in a state of nudity during a visit to the popular naturist beach. The revelation of his actions has sparked concern and outrage within the local community and beyond.Following his apprehension, Greensmith faced a series of serious charges. He was formally accused of nine counts of creating indecent images, a crime that highlights the severity of his misconduct. The case was brought before Bournemouth Magistrates Court, where Greensmith appeared to answer these charges on a recent Friday. His plea was guilty, acknowledging his involvement in the illicit filming.
Prosecutor Eleanor Fargin provided a stark account of Greensmith’s admission to police. She stated, “He admitted to police that he was filming the girls for his own enjoyment and that he gained sexual gratification from filming this age group.” This confession underscores the disturbing nature of his actions and the potential risk posed to vulnerable children.
During the court proceedings, Greensmith revealed that the incident was “a trial run” for similar attempts he intended to carry out in the future. Despite the gravity of his actions, Greensmith had no previous criminal convictions, which influenced the magistrate’s decision. Judge Roger House chose not to impose a custodial sentence but instead ordered Greensmith to participate in a structured rehabilitation program. This program involves regular group sessions in Hamworthy, designed to address and potentially alter his inclinations.
Judge House expressed cautious optimism about the outcome, stating, “There is the potential that you will have a strong desire to continue. But I hope this order, for your sake and everyone’s sake, will sort you out. It’s a difficult decision because you have behaved in a certain way and it might worsen, or become more hands-on. I hope it doesn’t.”
In addition to the community order, Greensmith has been placed on the sex offenders register for a period of five years. The court also considered, but ultimately decided against, imposing a sexual harm prevention order. The prosecution had requested restrictions that would have, among other things, banned Greensmith from owning any camera equipment. Judge House described such a restriction as “a bit draconian” given the circumstances, indicating a cautious approach to additional limitations.
This case highlights ongoing concerns about the safety of children at public and naturist beaches, and the importance of vigilant law enforcement and judicial processes in addressing such heinous crimes.
