JOHN FARMAN, HARTLEPOOL HERO TURNED CHILD RAPIST, SENTENCED TO 17 YEARS IN PRISON
In a shocking turn of events, John Farman, a man once celebrated as a hero in Hartlepool for his volunteer work with the RNLI, has been sentenced to 17 years in prison after being convicted of multiple heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of young girls. The sentencing took place at Teesside Crown Court, where the 64-year-old was found guilty of six counts of rape and an additional six counts of indecent assault, crimes that spanned over a decade and were committed decades ago.
Farman’s reputation in Hartlepool was once marked by his contributions to the community, including his service at Hartlepool Power Station and his role as a part-time firefighter.
In 1986, he was awarded the freedom of Hartlepool in recognition of his volunteer efforts with the RNLI, a gesture that underscored his standing as a local hero.
However, beneath this facade lay a dark secret that would eventually come to light after a lengthy investigation and trial.
The court proceedings revealed that Farman had been abusing two young girls over a period of years, with the abuse dating back to the 1970s and 1980s.
The victims, who had kept silent for many years, finally found the courage to come forward after confiding in each other.
Their testimonies detailed a pattern of repeated sexual assaults, including fondling, rape, and exposure to pornography.
One of the victims recounted how she was subjected to these acts over a prolonged period, with one incident involving Farman showing her a pornographic film and raping her on six separate occasions.
During the trial, the jury heard harrowing accounts of Farman’s abuse.
Shaun Dodds, the prosecutor, described how one of the victims shouted for help during an attack, only to be met with Farman’s chilling response: “See, I can do what I want when I want to you.” The jury also learned that Farman’s actions were not isolated incidents but part of a pattern of control and exploitation.
The victims, who were children at the time, did not report the abuse until they reached adulthood, believing at the time that such behavior was “normal.” Farman’s arrest last year followed their decision to report the crimes to the police.
He was taken into custody on Amberton Road, Hartlepool, and subsequently charged with the multiple offenses.
Throughout the trial, Farman maintained his innocence, denying the allegations, but the evidence presented was overwhelming.
The court’s verdict was unanimous, with the jury convicting him on all 12 counts.
Judge Michael Taylor addressed Farman directly during sentencing, emphasizing the severity of his crimes.
“These acts fall very high on the scale of offending behavior,” the judge stated.
“They were committed for your own gratification and without regard for the innocence of those young girls.
You exercised control over them, and this was repeated time after time.” The judge underscored that Farman’s actions had irreparably damaged the victims’ lives and that a substantial prison sentence was the only appropriate response.
Police officials expressed their support for the sentence, reaffirming their commitment to pursuing justice regardless of when crimes were committed.
Detective Constable Gillian Parkes of the Protecting Vulnerable People unit stated, “I welcome this sentence and believe it reinforces our message that we will always investigate thoroughly, sensitively, and professionally all allegations of sexual abuse, whether recent or historical.
My thoughts remain with the victims, and I hope this sentence will help them begin to move forward with their lives.” Farman’s case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance and justice in protecting vulnerable individuals from abuse, regardless of the passage of time.
The community of Hartlepool, once proud of his volunteer contributions, now grapples with the reality of his crimes, which have left a lasting scar on the lives of his victims.
