MAN JAILED FOR BRUTAL ASSAULT ON PARTNER OVER PETTY DISPUTE
A MAN named John Corlett, aged 45, of no fixed address, was convicted for physically assaulting his partner, Elaine Hodkinson, during an altercation over change from £20. The incident occurred on June 11 in the bedroom of her residence on Tithe Barn Street, Westhoughton. According to court reports, Corlett repeatedly punched Ms Hodkinson in the face, resulting in injuries such as black eyes and a suspected broken nose. The court heard that Corlett claimed he had only given her a 'backhander' for shopping, but the injuries indicated a violent attack involving multiple punches and him throwing her against a wall. The assault left Ms Hodkinson housebound for seven weeks, in addition to causing her shock and upset, especially considering she had previously provided him with a place to stay while he was homeless. Corlett pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm and was sentenced to two years in prison. The judge, Recorder Patrick Field QC, described the assault as 'particularly unpleasant and nasty.' A restraining order was also issued, banning him from contacting Ms Hodkinson or traveling to Tithe Barn Street.
