2004:A doctor formerly based in Westhoughton has received a nine-month prison sentence after being found guilty of engaging in sexual activity with a 14-year-old boy.
The defendant, Dr Aman Kumar, 34, who was previously a senior house officer at Hull Royal Infirmary, admitted to meeting the teenager outside a gay nightclub and taking him to his flat for sex.
The incident happened when Kumar came across the boy, who was being taken out of the venue because he was under 18.
It was presented in court that the boy had been out with his friends and a drag performer, and that Kumar believed the boy was over the age of consent, which is 16.
Kumar pleaded guilty to a charge of performing a serious sexual act on the minor, and also acknowledged possessing ecstasy.
Judge Robert Moore commented that Parliament's decision to lower the age of consent to 16 had inadvertently made it easier for predators to exploit young people, and that only a custodial sentence was appropriate.
The judge also pointed out that Kumar's life had been significantly disrupted by his actions, though the boy was also deeply affected.
Prosecutor Patrick Palmer told the court that Kumar admitted to police that he was attracted to young men.
