A MAN WHO WAS FOUND GUILTY OF SEXUALLY ABUSING AN UNDER-AGE SKEGNESS GIRL HAS BEEN JAILED FOR 7 YEARS
John Brown, aged 35, is set to serve an additional four-year period on licence after his release from prison, as a judge expressed confidence that he qualifies as a dangerous offender requiring extended supervision.Originally from Skegness and now residing in Coventry, Brown denied three sexual charges but was convicted following a trial at Lincoln Crown Court, where he represented himself.
The court was informed that Brown targeted a teenager during an incident in Skegness on August 10, 2020.
Details of the abuse revealed that he began by kissing the girl, then touched her breasts, and subsequently put a hand in her shorts.
He further coerced her to touch him sexually.
Brown, living on Whitmore Park Road in Coventry, was convicted of two counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child and one count of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity.
During sentencing, Recorder Graham Huston remarked that the significant age difference and grooming factors were evident in the case.
The judge also acknowledged that the victim had experienced serious psychological harm.
Recorder Huston stated, “You have severely impacted a young girl’s life,” indicating that Brown’s actions warranted an extended sentence to protect the public.
He also criticized Brown’s character, describing him as deceitful during trial proceedings.
Prosecutor Caroline Bradley emphasized that the victim suffered substantial mental health issues due to the abuse and noted that Brown was 30 years old at the time of the offences, illustrating a considerable age gap.
The victim, whose identity remains protected, delivered an emotional statement describing constant panic attacks and sleep difficulties.
"Every day, I feel like I am fighting against myself," she said.
She expressed her pain, saying, “What you did robbed me of my sense of normalcy.” In a second statement, her mother described how the abuse affected her daughter’s education and caused her to withdraw from social activities for five years.
"She experiences flashbacks of the abuse when touched or approached," her mother explained.
Her father also commented that he believed his daughter would never recover fully.
As part of his sentence, Brown was issued a Sexual Harm Prevention Order restricting future contact with children and was ordered to register as a sex offender for life.
