JOHN BARTHOLOMEW SENT TO PRISON FOR ABUSE AT ORPINGTON AND UPPER NORWOOD LEISURE CENTRES

In December 2013, a disturbing case of child sexual abuse unfolded at two well-known leisure facilities in Kent and London, involving a man named John Bartholomew. The incident centered around a 15-year-old autistic boy who was subjected to a horrifying ordeal at Walnuts Leisure Centre in Orpington, Kent.

According to court proceedings, Bartholomew, aged 50 and residing in Upper Norwood, had been stalking the young victim during multiple visits to the leisure centre. His predatory behavior culminated in him luring the boy into a secluded area within the swimming pool's changing rooms. It was here that Bartholomew forced the teenager to perform sexual acts on him, an act that left the young victim traumatized and frightened.

The court heard that during one of these assaultive encounters, the boy managed to break free from Bartholomew’s grasp and fled the scene. He ran out of the changing room and sought help from staff members, clearly distressed and in need of assistance. The quick response of the centre’s staff was crucial in preventing further harm.

Law enforcement officers were alerted immediately, and Bartholomew was apprehended as he was leaving the leisure centre premises. His arrest marked the beginning of a legal process that would see him face justice for his actions.

At Croydon Crown Court, Bartholomew was formally charged and subsequently convicted of rape and sexual assault. The court sentenced him to eight years in prison, a punishment deemed appropriate given the severity of his crimes.

Detective Faye Churchyard, a member of the Metropolitan Police’s Sapphire unit which specializes in investigating child abuse cases, described Bartholomew as a “dangerous man.” She emphasized that his actions appeared to be premeditated, suggesting that he had stalked his victim over an extended period before attacking him when he believed he could do so without detection.

DC Churchyard also praised the bravery of the young victim and his family, acknowledging the courage it took for the boy to come forward and see justice served. She expressed her hope that others who might have been affected by Bartholomew’s behavior would feel empowered to report their experiences to the police.

As Bartholomew begins his prison sentence, authorities continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious or concerning behavior, especially involving vulnerable children. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding and the need for constant vigilance in community spaces such as leisure centres.
