MAN LEFT THE MOTHER OF HIS CHILDREN WITH A BLEED ON THE BRAIN AFTER BATTERING HER WITH A PIECE OF WOOD
Charlie Lee, aged 40 and residing at Rookery Gardens, was sentenced to nine months in prison for inflicting what a judge described as “a real beating” on a woman.Despite the sentence, he will be released immediately as he has already spent eight months in custody while awaiting trial.
The incident occurred on May 31 of the previous year after an argument between Lee and the mother of his children, as stated by prosecutor Luke Bowyer at Croydon Crown Court.
The disagreement escalated when she drove to his residence carrying a piece of wood.
A physical altercation ensued, during which Lee grabbed the wooden object and assaulted her with it, the court was told.
She sustained injuries including a bleed on the brain and a large laceration to her eye socket.
In her statement, the victim expressed shock and emotional pain: “I feel numb as I cannot believe the father of my children has done this to me.” Lee was detained and during questioning claimed the act was in self-defence, but he later admitted his actions exceeded reasonable self-protection.
He told a probation officer, “I need to look at my own behaviour, I went over the top.” The court was informed that Lee had a history of 63 previous offences, including three assaults on the same woman.
He also struggled with substance abuse for an extended period but is said to have overcome this during his latest time in prison.
On January 29, Recorder Philip Kolvin KC sentenced Lee, stating, “This was a serious case of domestic violence...
You gave her a real beating.” Although a prison term was deemed necessary, because Lee has served more than 40% of his sentence, he will be released now.
