In April of the previous year, law enforcement officers conducted a search of John Ashburner's residence and confiscated a laptop that housed 79 illegal images involving children aged approximately four to 14.

During the court hearing at Newcastle Crown Court, Ashburner claimed he had not viewed the illicit collection but had downloaded a large archive containing some lawful images, which he believed might have been mixed in with the illegal ones.

However, prosecutor Matthew Hopkins contended otherwise, pointing out that emails recovered during the investigation showed Ashburner used his Hotmail account to send images to his iCloud email address, indicating his awareness of the illicit material.

The 70-year-old resident of Bellona Close, Hebburn, pleaded guilty to possessing 17 image files classified as Category A, the most serious, along with 25 Category B and 37 Category C images, between November 10, 2020, and September 5, 2023.

Defence attorney Jason Smith presented character references and letters from the defendant's family, emphasizing his clean record and long-term marriage.

Smith highlighted Ashburner’s feelings of deep shame and embarrassment, especially regarding the impact on his family and the victims depicted in the images.

He explained that during the COVID-19 pandemic, Ashburner, who was on leave from work, became bored and isolated, which allegedly led him to search for lawful images, ultimately resulting in the offending behavior.

Judge Paul Reid described the images as 'vile,' illustrating acts that should never have been committed.

The judge noted that Ashburner’s actions might have long-lasting repercussions for his life, stating, 'You are the author of your own misfortune, as you fully accept.' Until now, Ashburner had maintained a 'blameless' lifestyle, with a stable marriage and family life, prior to these offences.

He was sentenced to four months in prison, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to complete specific programs and pay costs of £150.

Additionally, Ashburner was mandated to register as a sex offender and comply with a sexual harm prevention order for seven years.
