MAN JAILED FOR ABUSE HE COMMITTED ALMOST FIVE DECADES AGO
A man has received a prison sentence for offences committed nearly fifty years ago.
Barry Houston, aged 63, subjected a school-aged boy to repeated sexual assaults at his home in South Tyneside during the victim’s teenage years.
After enduring the long-term impact of Houston’s actions, the survivor came forward to authorities in 2023, prompted by a chance encounter with his former abuser.
In police interviews, Houston denied the allegations.
Nonetheless, a three-day trial at Newcastle Crown Court in April led to his conviction.
Houston, residing on Tennant Street in Hebburn, was convicted of six charges: four counts of indecent assault on a boy under 14, and two counts of buggery of a boy under 16, all committed before the 2003 Sexual Offences Act.
On Monday, July 7, he was sentenced to six years and six months in prison.
Additionally, he will serve an extra year on an extended licence period after his release.
He will also be on the Sex Offenders’ Register indefinitely and was issued a lifelong Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO).
