NEWPORT MAN JAILED FOR RAPING VULNERABLE WOMAN WHILE SHE SLEPT
Man jailed for rape of ’emotionally fragile’ woman while she was asleepJohn Amos, 27, from Prince Street, Newport, was sentenced to eight years in prison for the rape of a vulnerable woman during the early hours of July 14.
Amos appeared at Cardiff Crown Court on a Friday for sentencing after pleading guilty.
The court was informed that the victim, described as an ’emotionally fragile’ and ’vulnerable’ woman, was awakened by Amos while he was raping her.
Prosecutor Michael Jones stated: “He couldn’t stop himself when he was having sex with her.
He said he knew it was wrong.”A victim impact statement read in court revealed the deep emotional trauma the victim experienced, stating: “She described that she tried to block out what had happened to her.
She tries to find positives but she finds it hard.
She doesn’t feel clean and she questions her relationships with other people now.
The statement added: “I feel I’ve completely lost myself.
I feel like I’m just existing at the moment.”Amos was sentenced to eight years in prison, and his name will be registered on the sex offenders register for life.
He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge and comply with a restraining order.
The judge, Recorder IWL Jones, commented: “The victim in this case was a vulnerable woman.
You did it for your own selfish, sexual gratification and for no other reason.
In the early hours of July 14, you were a rapist.”
