JEFFREY LONGHURST SHOCKS COWES WITH SEXUAL ASSAULT ON 10-YEAR-OLD GIRL
In a disturbing case that has left the community of Cowes deeply unsettled, Jeffrey Longhurst, a 68-year-old resident of Broadsmith Avenue, East Cowes, was convicted of sexually assaulting a young girl aged just 10 years old.The incident, which took place in July of the previous year, has had lasting emotional repercussions on the victim, who now suffers from nightmares and fears walking alone to school.
Longhurst's trial lasted five days, but he ultimately chose to admit to the charges four days into proceedings.
His admission came as a shock to many, as it confirmed the allegations of two separate sexual assaults against the young girl.
The court was told that Longhurst had consumed whisky and cider prior to the assaults, which may have impaired his judgment at the time.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that Longhurst had instructed the girl not to disclose what had happened, adding a layer of manipulation and intimidation to the case.
Following his admission, Longhurst was sentenced to 22 months in prison, but this sentence was suspended for two years, meaning he would not serve time unless he committed another offence within that period.
Additionally, he was placed under a sexual harm prevention order, which imposes restrictions aimed at preventing future offenses.
The court also imposed a six-month curfew, requiring Longhurst to remain indoors during the night hours from Tuesday to Saturday each week.
As part of his sentencing, he was ordered to pay costs amounting to £500.
