LAURENCE MARSDEN FROM COWES SENTENCED AFTER SEXUAL ASSAULTS ON COWES-NORWICH CYCLE TRACK

A man identified as Laurence Marsden, aged 24 and residing on Bernard Road in Cowes, has received a suspended prison sentence following his involvement in a series of disturbing incidents along the Cowes – Newport cycle track.

The events, which took place during the summer months, included acts of public indecency and a sexual assault, culminating in his arrest and subsequent court proceedings at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court on Friday, 8th December.

According to court records and statements presented during the hearing, Marsden had previously admitted to producing cannabis and exposing himself twice along the cycle path.

His initial plea on the charges of cannabis production and exposure was entered during a hearing on August 1, 2023.

However, he initially pleaded not guilty to the more serious charge of sexual assault, but this was later changed to a guilty plea, and he was found guilty of that offence during the recent sentencing.

The prosecution, led by Ann Smout, detailed the disturbing incidents that occurred on the evening of June 26.

At approximately 6:30 PM, a woman walking along the Cowes – Newport cycle track encountered Marsden, who was engaged in masturbating with his penis exposed in public.

During this encounter, Marsden reportedly asked the woman, “Do you like it?” before committing a sexual assault.

The court was also informed that just a few days later, on July 1 at around 5:30 PM, a younger woman running along the same path observed Marsden once again masturbating in a similar manner on the side of the track.

Following these incidents, officers from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary arrested Marsden on July 30.

During the arrest, law enforcement officials discovered a quantity of cannabis in his possession.

As part of his bail conditions, Marsden was fitted with an electronic monitoring tag that restricted his movements and specified when he was permitted to leave his residence.

In the sentencing hearing, the court imposed a 12-week prison sentence, which was suspended for 18 months.

Additionally, Marsden was ordered to stay away from the Red Squirrel Trail for a period of nine months, effectively banning him from the area.

The court also mandated that he complete 40 days of rehabilitation activities and perform 100 hours of unpaid community work.

Furthermore, Marsden is required to participate in a 43-day offending behaviour programme and register with Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary for a period of seven years.

He was also ordered to pay costs amounting to £650 and a surcharge fee of £154.

These measures reflect the serious nature of his offences and the court’s efforts to prevent future incidents, while also emphasizing the importance of rehabilitation and community safety in cases involving public sexual misconduct and drug-related offences.
