GLASGOW MAN GETS 40 MONTHS FOR MURDERING MOTHER WITH DEMENTIA

Jeffrey Ash, aged 50, confessed to the murder of his 83-year-old mother, Ellen Ash, by suffocating her as she battled dementia.

After the incident, he started a fire at the family residence in Colston, Glasgow.

He subsequently fled to London but eventually surrendered to police authorities.

Ash pleaded guilty to charges related to responsible homicide and intentional arson.

He received a 40-month prison sentence at Edinburgh’s High Court.

During sentencing, Lord Pentland underscored the value of human life, noting: "Regardless of the difficulties faced, you had no right — as you now acknowledge — to end her life." The judge also pointed out that Ash’s responsibility was to seek assistance instead of turning to violence, adding: "You will always be burdened with guilt." Court records revealed that Ash was the primary caregiver for his mother, who was suffering from dementia, experiencing symptoms such as confusion and wandering.

Although social services considered providing 24-hour care, Ash declined, stating he was not prepared to move her into a care home.

Her health deteriorated over time, leading to hospital visits and increased care requirements.

The tragic events came to light after a witness noticed smoke coming from the family home on March 21.

Firefighters found Mrs.

Ash's severely burned body and nearby containers of flammable liquids.

In police interviews, Ash admitted, "I killed my mum last night.

I smothered her and then set fire to the house," justifying his actions by saying, "I could not bear to see her suffering anymore — she had Alzheimer's." He showed remorse, stating, "I then took a bus to London.

I couldn't stay there anymore — I had to escape," and later accepted guilt, saying, "I am guilty and I want to serve my time."
