JASON ROBERTS FROM ABINGDON SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX ABUSE AND THREATENED SUICIDE AT POLICE STATION
In a case that has shocked the community of Abingdon, a man named Jason Roberts has been sentenced to prison after being found guilty of serious sexual offenses involving a young girl.The disturbing incidents came to light after the victim, now aged 15, disclosed the abuse to a teacher in March, revealing that the abuse had occurred back in 2009 when she was only 10 years old.
Following this revelation, authorities launched an investigation that led to Roberts's arrest.
He was subsequently charged with multiple counts of sexually assaulting a child under the age of 13, specifically five counts, along with a charge of possessing a bladed article in a public place.
Roberts, who is 35 years old and resides in Abingdon, admitted to these charges during police interviews conducted in March.
His plea of guilty resulted in a sentence of 20 months imprisonment handed down at Oxford Crown Court.
Additionally, Roberts was ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years, a measure intended to monitor and prevent further offenses.
Despite his admission of guilt, Roberts was initially released on bail.
However, his actions shortly thereafter raised further concerns.
Less than a month after his release, Roberts returned to the Abingdon police station carrying a Stanley knife.
During this incident, he threatened to take his own life, creating a tense and dangerous situation.
The duty officer at the station responded swiftly, managing to disarm Roberts and prevent any harm.
Roberts was then re-arrested on the spot.
Detective Constable Jeff Wheble expressed his satisfaction with the outcome of the case, stating, “I am pleased with Roberts’ conviction, and that he pleaded guilty which meant his victim did not have to go through the further ordeal of giving evidence in court.
I would like to thank the victim for her courage in coming forward, and hope the conviction will encourage other victims of sexual abuse to report it to the police and the other authorities.” This case underscores the importance of community vigilance and the bravery of victims in coming forward to seek justice, especially in cases involving vulnerable children.
