MAN JAILED FOR CONTROLLING PARTNER
A man accused of subjecting his partner to a prolonged period of controlling and abusive behaviour has received a custodial sentence exceeding two years.Janis Korsaks, aged 42 and residing on Hornbeam Close, March, became more violent as his partner attempted to end their relationship, citing his excessive drinking and aggressive tendencies as reasons for her decision.
On the night of November 8 last year, Korsaks repeatedly pressured his partner, who was in bed, to come downstairs for a conversation.
Several hours later, he assaulted her by punching her while she was in bed and issued threats.
Police were summoned at approximately 2.30am the next morning, leading to Korsaks being taken into custody.
In the period prior to his arrest, Korsaks had engaged in a continuous pattern of physical assault and emotional abuse against his partner.
He also issued multiple threats about what he would do if she decided to leave him.
He exerted control over her finances, kept a close watch on her whereabouts, and often demanded information about her location.
On one occasion, he appeared unannounced at her workplace in an attempt to take her back home.
During a hearing at Huntingdon Law Courts on Thursday, 28 May, Korsaks was sentenced to two years and two months in prison after pleading guilty to charges of controlling and coercive behaviour in an intimate relationship.
He was also issued with a seven-year restraining order.
Additional charges including two counts of threats to kill, two counts of assault by beating, two counts of intentional strangulation, and threatening someone with a bladed weapon were ordered to be kept on file.
