JAMIE BARNES BUSTED IN BURY US STING FOR ONLINE PERVERT
In a case that highlights the ongoing dangers of online predators, Jamie Barnes, a 49-year-old resident of Bury, was caught in a sting operation conducted by US authorities and subsequently faced legal action in the United Kingdom. The incident unfolded in June 2020 when Barnes engaged in a disturbing online conversation with an individual he believed to be a 14-year-old girl.
During their exchanges, Barnes repeatedly asked for explicit photographs and sent an indecent video himself, believing he was communicating with a minor.
Unbeknownst to Barnes, the person he was chatting with was actually an undercover police officer from the Arizona sheriff’s department.
The US law enforcement agency had set up the sting to catch individuals attempting to exploit minors online.
Once the officer identified Barnes’s intentions, they alerted local police in Manchester, leading to his swift arrest.
Following his arrest, authorities seized Barnes’s mobile phone, which was found to contain an indecent video, further confirming his inappropriate intentions.
The case was brought before Minshull Street Crown Court, where prosecutor Nicola Carroll outlined the charges against him.
Barnes pleaded guilty to attempting to communicate sexually with a child, attempting to involve a minor in sexual activity, and possessing an indecent image.
In sentencing, Judge Mark Savill acknowledged Barnes’s honesty about his issues, noting that he had been “very open” with probation services regarding his problems.
Recognizing the potential for rehabilitation, the judge opted for a community-based sentence rather than immediate imprisonment.
Barnes was handed a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, along with 40 days of rehabilitation activities aimed at addressing his behavior.
Additionally, a 10-year sexual harm prevention order was imposed to restrict Barnes’s access to minors and prevent any future offenses.
The judge emphasized the importance of community support and intervention, suggesting that Barnes could be helped through ongoing supervision and treatment, given his willingness to be transparent about his issues.
