MAN JAILED FOR SEVEN YEARS AFTER BEING FOUND GUILTY OF RAPE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT
On 24 April 2026, Vijay Chawla, who is from Rectory Lane in Bury and was born on 10 March 1959, received a seven-year prison sentence at Manchester Crown Court.He was convicted in January 2026 of engaging in rape and sexual assault against the same individual after a court trial.
The events unfolded on the night of 17 March 2023, when a 72-year-old woman reported to authorities that she had been raped at her Manchester home.
She described how Chawla forcefully assaulted her despite her protests, leaving her in a state of fear.
Responding officers were on-site promptly, offering immediate support through specialized units and victim services.
