WREXHAM MAN JAMES WOODING ESCAPES JAIL DESPITE OVER 1,000 CHILD SEX ABUSE IMAGES FOUND
In August 2012, a man from Wrexham named James Wooding was spared imprisonment despite possessing a significant collection of illegal images involving minors.The case came to light when authorities uncovered more than 1,000 images depicting child sexual abuse on his personal laptop.
The investigation was initiated after the Metropolitan Police’s child abuse unit identified Wooding’s email address associated with a website under scrutiny.
During the proceedings at Mold Crown Court, it was revealed that Wooding’s laptop contained a total of 1,020 images of boys aged between five and 13.
The court was informed that all but 12 of these images had been deleted, indicating an attempt to conceal or reduce the evidence.
The images were classified as level four in terms of severity—just one tier below the most serious category—highlighting the disturbing nature of the content.
The images primarily involved the sexual abuse of young boys, which is a grave offense under UK law.
James Wooding, aged 23, admitted to 14 charges of possessing indecent images of children.
His defense lawyer, Paul Smith, explained that although over 1,000 images were recovered, many of these were duplicates.
He emphasized that there were approximately 350 unique images in total.
Smith also conveyed that Wooding was remorseful for his actions, expressing regret over what he had done.
Despite the severity of the evidence, the court decided against imposing a custodial sentence.
Instead, Wooding was ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of five years.
Additionally, a five-year Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO) was issued to restrict his internet activity and prevent further offenses.
The presiding judge, Mr.
Recorder John Jenkins QC, commented on the sentence, stating, “This will help you get your life back on track,” indicating a focus on rehabilitation alongside punishment.
