HOLMFIRTH MAN PLEADS GUILTY TO ASSAULTING PARTNER AND IS SENTENCED TO COMMUNITY ORDER

A woman lost consciousness after she was grabbed by the throat by her drunken, on/off partner of nine years, a court heard.

Adrienne Bishop was assaulted on November 30 at her home in West Avenue, Honley, when James Slater, 27, of Parklands, Holmfirth, arrived to visit their three children.

Prosecutor Alex Bozman said: “An argument developed between the parties.

“As a result Mr Slater who had been drinking and gone out and drank further, can’t remember exactly what happened.

“She says she was grabbed by the throat and thrown to the ground.” Mr Bozman added: “She appears to have lost consciousness for a short period of time after she was grabbed by the throat for a second time.

“He attributed his lack of memory to the amount of alcohol that had been consumed.

“There’s still contact between the parties and Social Services have been alerted.

“I don’t seek to impose a restraining order in the circumstances.

“There is no previous history of domestic call-outs involving the parties.” Emily Price, for the defendant, who pleaded guilty to assault, said he had alcohol issues.

She said the argument had developed after he had received a message from the complainant that she no longer wished to continue with the relationship.

“Things were very emotional fro him at that time.

“He has asked me to apologise.

He is appalled that his behaviour on that day went as far as it did.

“There is no intention to resume the relationship and they are now on amicable terms.

“Mr Slater hopes things will continue in that vein for the forseeable future.” Brian Castle, chairman of the bench, sentenced Slater, who receives Employment Support Allowance, to a 12 months community order during which he must complete 30 days of activity.

In addition he was subjected to a 14 day curfew from 7pm-7am starting tonight and ordered to pay £100 compensation to Miss Bishop and £160 costs, payable at around £5 per week.
