SENTENCED TO FIVE YEARS IN PRISON FOR RAPING A WOMAN IN HER OWN HOME
A man from Edinburgh has been sentenced to five years in prison for raping a woman in her own home.Innocent Megbolu, 37, was also ordered to stay away from the woman indefinitely through a non-harassment order.
The incident occurred on August 21, 2023, in Leith, where Megbolu, who lived in Craigmillar, physically restrained the victim after she asked him to leave her flat.
During the attack, Megbolu held onto her while the woman was crying and shouting, yet he continued his assault.
The judge remarked that the harm caused was particularly severe, emphasizing the victim’s entitlement to feel safe in her own residence.
Although Megbolu denied the rape during the trial, the jury found him guilty based on evidence presented.
An acquaintance of the woman described how Megbolu used a wrestling-style move to hold her down before assaulting her.
After the attack, the woman was visibly shaken and in shock, calling a friend to reveal she had been raped.
The defense acknowledged that due to the seriousness of the crime, imprisonment was inevitable, but highlighted that Megbolu was a first-time offender, working in the care sector, and that he was married with two children.
The court also noted that it was highly likely Megbolu would be deported after serving his sentence.
He was subsequently placed on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely.
-------------------- An Edinburgh man used a wrestling move to restrain a woman before raping her at her home.
The jury at Edinburgh’s High Court convicted 37-year-old Innocent Megbolu of the offense, after hearing evidence that he forced himself onto the victim and resembled a wrestling move.
Though he initially denied any wrongdoing, witnesses testified that she confided in friends about the assault, describing how Megbolu flipped her over and raped her.
The victim was described as being in shock, trembling, and looking exhausted following the attack.
Police soon gathered enough evidence for an arrest, and Megbolu was remanded in custody until sentencing on October 6, 2025.
The judge ordered a criminal justice social report to better understand the defendant’s background and discuss the potential risks posed to the public and women.
Prosecutors indicated that a custodial sentence was likely given the severity of the offense, and Megbolu recognized that bail was unlikely to be continued.
His bail was revoked, and he was remanded in custody awaiting sentencing.
