MOTHER SENTENCED TO 3 YEARS FOR BABY'S SHOCKING DEATH
India Shemwell, who was 21 years old at the time and is now 24, received a three-year prison sentence after confessing to two charges of child cruelty linked to her four-month-old son Elijah Shemwell.Elijah passed away on 5 January 2022, just three days after being discovered pale, limp, and drowsy at her home in Belper, Derbyshire.
During the trial of her former partner, Carl Alesbrook, Shemwell was described as a 'completely inadequate mother' for her failure to seek immediate medical help for her child.
Her mother, Rachel Shemwell, provided a victim impact statement in court, stating that her daughter was 'not the best of mums' and suggesting that things might have been different if she had asked for assistance.
Visual evidence showing Elijah appearing 'lifeless' was played in court, and Shemwell was held partly responsible for the injuries Elijah sustained, which included brain damage and other serious harm.
These injuries were likely the result of her neglect and failure to respond appropriately.
She was also charged with overall neglect, and her case was part of a larger investigation into the circumstances surrounding Elijah's death.
