IMRAN SABIR AND OTHERS SENTENCED IN KEIGHLEY FOR VICTIM'S RAPE AND ABUSE
Four men who subjected a highly vulnerable teenager from Keighley, West Yorkshire, to a prolonged campaign of rape have been sentenced to prison. The offenders gave the girl alcohol and drugs and systematically and repeatedly abused her between 2009 and 2010, prosecutors stated. The victim, now 20, reported the abuse to police, leading to the convictions. Her ordeal resulted in long-term psychological issues, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). A fifth individual involved was also convicted of three rapes and will be sentenced separately in the future.
Prosecutor Katherine Robinson told Bradford Crown Court that the victim was 20 years old when she disclosed the abuse. Police discovered that the older men targeted her because they recognized her as “plainly extremely vulnerable,” noting her alcohol problems at the time.
In a victim statement read aloud in court, the woman expressed that she was left “unable to look after myself due to my mental health” following the abuse.
Judge Andrew Hatton, sentencing the offenders, remarked, “The gross abuse she suffered at the hands of you is a significant factor in her current mental health.”
Detective Chief Inspector Alan Weekes of West Yorkshire Police commented, “The victim had her childhood robbed from her. I hope that seeing all these men sent to prison today for these horrific crimes will help her begin to look forward to the future.”
Ed Hulbert from the Crown Prosecution Service stated, “The men cynically manipulated and ruthlessly exploited a young and vulnerable girl.”
The sentences handed down were as follows:
- Omar Safdar, 30, of no fixed address, was sentenced to 12 years after being convicted of three counts of rape.
- Imran Sabir, 42, of Spencer Street, Keighley, received a 12-year prison term for two counts of rape.
- Hassan Basharat, 32, of Highfield Road, Keighley, was also sentenced to 12 years after being convicted of three counts of rape and received an additional 16 months for two counts of dangerous driving.
- Barber Hussain, 36, of Thorn Lane, Bradford, was jailed for 13 years following his conviction on seven counts of rape.
- Amjad Hussain, also convicted of three rapes, will face sentencing at a future date.
All five men were convicted in October following a trial.
